Affliction: Day of Reckoning was held on January 24, 2009 in Anaheim, California at the Honda Center. Former UFC light-heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz was a commentator for the event. This event was originally scheduled to take place on October 11, 2008 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The main event was World Alliance of Mixed Martial Arts (WAMMA) Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko defending his belt against former UFC Heavyweight Champion Andrei Arlovski.
Also on the card was Josh “Babyface Assassin” Barnett, who took on Gilbert Yvel. In a light-heavyweight match, current Strikeforce Champion Renato “Babalu” Sobral took on Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou. Matt Lindland was re-assigned from a 195-pound catchweight bout with Sobral to a middleweight matchup against former UFC Light-Heavyweight Champion Vitor Belfort.
Headlining the undercard, which was broadcast on HDNet Fights, was the last IFL Light-Heavyweight Champion Vladimir Matyushenko against PRIDE veteran Antonio Rogerio Nogueira.

A quality production overall, much better than their first effort. The commentating team was solid despite some glitches and major nervousness from Tito. I can’t imagine anyone will let Tito do anymore commentary or post fight interviews. The backstage crew was a little awkward, to say the least. I’m thankful they didn’t have a musical intermission by Ozzy (or anyone else). They didn’t have the time anyway.
The refereeing was good and it was cool to see Big John back in the ring. There were lots of opportunities for the refs to do stupid stuff, but they didn’t.
One of the greatest things about this card (and the last) was the names on the card. Some of the matchups are so good that they’re quality even if the fights doesn’t turn out that great.
Another great things about this is that we get to see the PPV and HDNet fights, totaling in 10 fights. That’s awesome!
All this comparing UFC and Affliction is really tired already. Its like comparing Mo Lawal to Fedor. We all know who is the best. We know who has a tried and tested track record and who is a promising and entertaining up and comer. Do I think the up and comer is better than the long time champion? Of course not. They’re not even in the same division. Do I still want to see the up and comer every time they come out? Of course I do.
