Kenny Florian will make his featherweight debut against a tough opponent at UFC 131. Revealed during the online webcast of ESPN’s MMA Live, Florian announced that he will fight Diego Nunes when the Ultimate Fighting Championship returns to Vancouver, Canada.
A two time lightweight championship contender, Florian has made the move down to the 145 pound weight class in response to his recent loss to Gray Maynard while competing for a chance to become number 1 contender once again. Florian first competed on the first season of the Ultimate Fighter as a middleweight fighter. He was defeated in the finals of the tournament by Diego Sanchez.
Since that time, Florian made his name in the lightweight division. During his stretch he was defeated by Sean Sherk and BJ Penn both times he competed for a chance to hold the crown. His resume includes impressive victories over Clay Guida, Takanori Gomi, and Roger Huerta.
Nunes made his name competing in the WEC where he amassed a 4-1 record. At UFC 125 he defeated the former WEC Featherweight Champion, Mike Thomas Brown, but a split decision. Eleven of Nunes 16 victories have come by either knockout or submission stoppage.
UFC 131 is set for the Rogers Arena on June 11th. The event is rumored to feature the main event of Brock Lesnar against Junior dos Santos.
