Bellator Fighting Championships is enjoying a solid position in the MMA industry at this time. As Zuffa and the UFC continue to make major moves in the direction of progression, Bellator finds itself in a position to benefit almost every time. With the possibility looming that the organization will move to Spike TV to “take the place” of the departing UFC; here are some additional suggestions of steps I would like to see the organization take to further develop their brand.
Signing of Free Agents
As with any sports organization that is looking to move closer to success, the signing of free agents is a necessary evil. Now this suggestion does not mean that Bellator should chase after every UFC castoff, not by any means. However, there are some names within that pool of castoffs that would bring some decent fights and possible fan fare to their organization. An example of such a person would be Gerald Harris who many people thought was a growing contender. I would also be interested in seeing Robert Drysdale in their organization after two or three more fights in his growing MMA career.
Exposure of their Fighters
Bellator has some big names within its ranks such as Eddie Alvarez, Hector Lombard, Pat Curran and Ben Askren. I would like to see the organization assist with the development of these individuals. For example, HBO Boxing and the UFC have both capitalized off of the reality TV show format by showcasing their fighters during a lead up to a big fight. While Bellator may not have the television spacing to create a show, they could use such venues as YouTube to develop webisodes for their fighters. Imagine a series focusing on featherweight champion Joe Warren as he prepares to try out for the Greco Roman National Wrestling team. I believe that would be an interesting way to reveal more about their fighters.
Use of Social Media
Going hand in hand with the second suggestion, I believe that Bellator can take advantage of the growth of social media and how it is such a part of their fan bases’ lives. Currently their Facebook page lacks any real customized marketing tactics and it’s no wonder that their “likes” lags behind that of the UFC. While this number doesn’t truly relate to their overall revenue power; I do believe that online presences is an important step in the growth of any company and as the new number two in the world of MMA, BFC should do more to increase their look and influence within the Internet.
Competition always brings out the best in those involved and I believe that for MMA to continue to grow and develop the UFC will need some form of competition. Currently Bellator and every other league for that matter is a distant second and hopefully that will change over time.
