Two Heavyweights Collide at UFC on Fox

MMA is one of the fastest-growing sports in the country, and as such its marquee matchups are beginning to garner more and more attention. While the sport has not yet attained the levels of popularity that, for instance, boxing enjoyed in its prime, the future seems promising, and people are looking more closely at what is truly an engaging and entertaining sport. So, if you have any interest at all in joining the club and keeping a closer eye on MMA, you may want to review your television package at Tvbydirect.com in order to make sure that you have access to the Cain Velasquez vs. Junior dos Santos heavyweight fight coming up on November 12th in California.

What is interesting about a fight like this in such a young sport is that we don’t yet see (and perhaps never will see) the sorts of records that we see in boxing, where two champions may square off each other with identical 35-0 career marks. In fact, according to ESPN, Velasquez and dos Santos are tied for the longest winning streak in MMA history, at just 7 fights apiece. What this essentially means or boils down to, is that MMA is still young enough to be looking for its greats – and if brief history is any indication, the winner of this fight may well go on to be considered the first “best ever” in his sport.

It is tough, however, to even pick a favorite heading into this fight. Dos Santos seems to be earning more analyst selections as the probable winner, and it is widely believed that if the fight is fought in a primarily upright position, Dos Santos will emerge victorious. However, it is also important to remember that Cain Velasquez took down Brock Lesnar, in what may be the most impressive MMA win to date. This one is looking about as close to a toss-up as you could get, with perhaps a slight edge going to Dos Santos.

The most interesting aspect of this fight, in the end, is the size of the fighters. Again, this is a young sport, and the issue of size vs. skill has been much debated among fans and analysts alike. Velasquez and Dos Santos represent skill and agility over strength – they are athletes, rather than brutes. And, while there are still behemoths like Lesnar lurking in the sport, the fact that this title fight is between two smaller heavyweights may be a strong indication that the future of the sport will value more agile, skilled athletes over strongmen. Whatever the case, most seem to agree – this is the biggest fight in the short history of MMA.
