Colby Covington was again on fire when he defeated Robbie Lawler in the main event of the UFC Newark card two weeks ago. Covington emerged on top in all five rounds, dominating Lawler in one of his greatest performances. All of the judges seemed to agree, with each of their scorecards indicating that Covington won every round.
During the build-up to the fight, Covington got a serious cut above his eye, leading to speculation that he would pull out. However, despite that setback, Covington pulled himself together and gave a ‘perfect’ and ‘flawless’ performance, as he termed it against Lawler.
Speaking to the MMA media, Covington said that it was a perfect show from him given the circumstances and adversities that he went through when training. “I was not able to train or take contact because I got a nasty cut on my eye two and a half, three weeks before the fight,” said Covington.
‘I am on a different level’
Covington argues that beating a future hall of famer is an indicator that he is on a different level. He said that everybody was afraid to fight Lawler, but he not only fought him but also dominated him. Indeed, taking the fight on very short notice and dominating a legend like Lawler the way Covington did is no easy task. Covington had only four weeks to prepare but still managed carry the day.
Covington, who to date has only one career loss, showed everyone why he calls himself the best welterweight in the world. “So it went perfect (the fight), I didn’t get touched. Flawless perfect fight.”

No signs of rust?
More than a year has passed since we last saw Covington in the cage. Many wanted to see how he would perform after being away for such a long time and how would fare against Lawler. His performance in the Octagon, however, did not resemble someone who had spent more than a year on the sidelines.
His fans would argue that his performance was an indicator of how good he is, strengthening the claim that he is the best welterweight in the world. Going into the fight after a serious injury with a shorter preparation time and then emerging the winner is certainly an indicator of greatness.
‘The win cements my legacy’
During the interview, Covington reinforced that idea, saying that the win over Lawler cements his legacy and indicates that he is the best welterweight in the world. “It shows that I am not just a wrestler and can strike,” Covington said. In that fight alone, Covington set a record for the most strikes ever thrown in a UFC fight. His 533 strikes in the fight is the most ever.
The win earned Covington a title shot against current champion Kamaru Usman. The fight is expected to happen later this year.
