Let me back that up: Not one in six fights went to decision. Lauzon avenged his broken testicles via RNC and executed perhaps the sweetest backflip-off-the-top-rope in MMA history. Paul Buentello got back in the game and picked apart “Baby Fedor” with excellent striking. Babalu went Darce Vader on Sokoudjou Plankwalker. Belfort nearly killed Lindland. Barnett put on a ground and pound clinic and solidified his new number one contender status. And in the Main Event, the greatest pound-for-pound fighter in the world highlight-reel, stone-cold KTFO’d a true number one contender in his prime.
Awards Royale:
Belly of the Night: Kiril Sidelnikov. This newbie totally outdid usual suspects Emelianenko and Barnett.
Demotion of the Night: Juanito Ibarra as cutman.
Official Fighting Style of the Night: (tie) Bobby Green for “Hood” and Josh Barnett for “Pro Wrestling”. No, I’m not kidding.
Celeb-in-the-Crowd of the Night: Ron Jeremy.
Retiree of the Night: Sokoudjou.
Mistake of the Night: Hiring Scott Ferrall.
Neck Tat of the Night: Yvel over “Babalu” with a crown right on the Adam’s Apple.
Best Dressed: Chuck Zito and his white leather jacket (very Zito).
Worst Dressed: Matt Lindland, as always.
Comeback of the Night: Tight shorts.
Back to the future: IF there is an Affliction 3 (and I think we ALL now hope there will be), here are my predictions for the title and Main Card (not really rocket science, but…):
Affliction “Validation”
Fedor Emelianenko vs. Josh Barnett
Renato “Babalu” Sobral vs. Tito Ortiz (or Nogueira if Tito’s not ready)
Andre Arlovski vs. Paul Buentello
Vitor Belfort vs. ? (Affliction needs to pickup another 185 lb. Fighter)
Dan Lauzon vs. Chris Horodecki
Note: These predictions are based on Affliction’s current stable of fighters.
Talk amongst yourselves.
While the event was good. I don’t think it was anywhere near one of the best PPV’s of all time. Of the 6 fights only one had any real meaning(Fedor/AA). Yvel is a good fighter, but nowhere near top ten, which makes Barnett’s performance kind of underwhelming…even he thought so. Belfort beat Lindland who hadn’t beaten anyone relevant as of late. I loved the KO though, that was great! The other fights were decent IMO.
