Lightweight Championship bout: Jamie Varner defeated Donald Cerrone via technical split decision* (49-46 x2 – Varner, 48-47 – Cerrone) to retain the WEC Lightweight title.
After Cerrone lands an unintentional illegal knee to Varner’s head at 3:12 minutes of round 5, the fight went to the scorecards, with the fifth frame being scored.
Damn Cerrone can take some punishment! Cerrone is a scary man. But Varner is a smart fighter.
The ending wasn’t a total disappointment. That’s a rematch I’m looking forward to.

Cerrone is a scary dude. The way he kept coming forward even when he was losing was pretty intense.
I give Varner the benefit of the doubt in terms of the severity of the knee to the head. But its worth mentioning that if this were in Dream, Varner would be KOd.
This is a perfect example of why knees to the head of a downed opponent needs to be revised and maybe removed all together.
Right before the knee landed, Varner was on his feet. What difference does it make if he was squatting on his feet or upright on his knees? None.
Regardless this was a great fight and definitely worthy of fight of the night, especially since it went to the scorecards.
