Kenny Florian Predicted Diego Sanchez Wouldn’t Last As a Lightweight

By Bryan Levick

Maybe Kenny Florian should quit his day job!

In an interview conducted with Cage Potato, Florian discusses everything from his upcoming bout with Takanori Gomi to Diego Sanchez’s run in the lightweight division.

Florian also says that he knew all along that Sanchez would eventually make the move back up to welterweight.

Ken-Flo went on to say that the talent level is just too deep and that Sanchez figured that he would come in and lay waste to the smaller fighters.

Sanchez made his debut as a lightweight at UFC 95 and took home a unanimous decision victory against a man Florian finished in the first round, Joe Stevenson.

In his second bout he and Clay Guida put on the 2009 fight of the year, this time Sanchez squeaked by with a split decision.

Florian took on Guida in his first bout back after losing to BJ Penn at UFC 101 and choked The Carpenter out in the second round.

Both men were beaten decisively by Penn but Florian looked more impressive against their other two common opponents.

Florian explained that besides Penn, he is the only other fighter who is consistently finishing fights in the lightweight division.

He explained that he believed Sanchez never looked good at 155lbs. and he wasn’t able to recreate the success he had in the welterweight division.

When asked if he would entertain a rematch with Sanchez, who of course defeated Florian via first round TKO in a bout that determined the season one middleweight champion on the first installment of The Ultimate Fighter, Florian seemed very receptive.

Florian said anything is possible and he would welcome a match with Sanchez at either lightweight or even a catchweight.

There is a whole lot of sense in what Florian is saying. He is spot on when he says that the lightweight division is stacked and that it would not be easy for anyone to come in and start finishing their opponents.

He is also right when he said that he and Penn are the only fighters in the division finishing fights.

Not that there aren’t any other lightweights finishing their bouts but the two of them are the ones who do it consistently.

Another lightweight that doesn’t put their fate in the judges hands is George Sotiropoulos who has finished all four of his fights.

Florian is always improving, when he lost to Penn he made a change in trainers and looked impressive against Guida.

Did he actually predict Sanchez’s demise as a lightweight? That’s hard to say but everything else he has said makes a whole lot of sense.
