I think we saw a perfect example of "the best defense is a good offense". People's knock on Jones was his defensive liabilities. But Jones shows that you can afford to make mistakes if you can compensate with something else and his physical gifts and aggression allow him to do just that.
Jones did a really good job halting Shogun's forward momentum with sidekicks to the knee, which I've always thought were under utilized and must be especially effective against someone with multiple reconstructive knees replacements. Then he followed up with combinations and his arms are so long that he can hit all kinds of angles and Shogun couldn't get around him. When they both were fighting for the Thai clinch Jones was able to land knees with his hips so far back Shogun wasn't able to reach him with his knees.
Jones was so composed he spun for a knee bar with only a few seconds left on the clock. He knew he didn't have time to complete the submission, but he still went for it just to show his dominance.
