Though Jose Aldo is closing in on a year since last competing in the Octagon, the division continues to heat up below him, as lightweight standouts Frankie Edgar and Clay Guida will be joining the weight class in 2013. Edgar, who may consider the rightful champ and top lightweight, will be immediately slotted into a title shot, while Guida jumps right into the proverbial “mix.” Win or lose, both men will play a big role in shaping the perception of the top fighters at 145 pounds, some of whom, like Erik Koch and Darren Elkins, have strung together winning streaks against perceived inferior opposition. And with the expectation growing that the featherweight championship will have to carry PPV main events in the coming year, the consideration of how marketable the champion and his challengers will be will continue to dominate discussions about which contenders have the inside track on a title opportunity. Fighters will be leapfrogged, whether through injury or tepid performances, and it remains to be seen whether the fighters viewed as viable contenders going into December will be the same ones speculated about as 2013 begins. It’s going to be a long cold winter, and some fighters will remain on the outside looking in.
