Alexander Gustafsson‘s matchup with Shogun Rua at UFC on Fox 5 is the biggest and most relevant matchup of the month, as the Forrest Griffin injury has left Phil Davis without an opponent at UFC 155. However, because Jon Jones is on the sidelines until April due to filming for the next season of The Ultimate Fighter, alongside middleweight mouthpiece turned undeserving lightweight contender Chael Sonnen, the other contending fighters in the division, many of whom have already lost to Jones, will have ample opportunity to make their respective cases for being next in line. Between Gustaffson and Davis, heavy-hitting former heavyweight James Te Huna, and UFC newcomers Ryan Jimmo and Glover Teixeira, the UFC brass is hoping that a new face makes an impression before the spring, in time to Ruin the Special Night of the division’s top star. Otherwise, Jones will come dangerously close to cleaning out the division, leaving only superfight talk to fuel fan interest.
