Velasquez vs. Bigfoot: The Rematch No One Wanted To See This Soon

By Adam Martin

I’m not sure about you guys, but I don’t really want to see Cain Velasquez vs. Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva 2, at least this soon.

That’s not to say I won’t watch the fight. Of course I’m going to watch it. But I’m not really that excited for it, and I don’t think many other people are, either.

Just about a year ago at UFC 146, Velasquez took on “Bigfoot” in what was both Silva’s UFC debut and Velasquez’ bounceback fight after losing the UFC heavyweight championship to Junior dos Santos at UFC on FOX 1.

The fight didn’t even last a round.

Velasquez took the bigger Silva down with ease, threw an elbow that cut “Bigfoot” open, continued to beat on with some brutal ground and pound, and soon afterwards Silva — who was bathing in his own blood – curled up until the referee stopped the bout for a first-round TKO finish for Velasquez.

According to Silva, the cut really bothered him. The giant heavyweight said that he had problems seeing Velasquez’ strikes and said that the fight would have played out much differently if he had been able to see.

Hmm, I’m not so sure about that. Even if Silva could have seen Velaquez’ strikes coming, that doesn’t meant they wouldn’t have hurt, and it doesn’t mean the fight wouldn’t have ended so soon. And honestly, I think this rematch is going to play out the exact same way.

Kudos to Silva for smashing Alistair Overeem in the third round of their UFC 156 fight and earning his title shot, but keep in mind that before he clipped “The Reem’s” chin he had been taken down and put on his back for two full rounds. And Overeem’s wrestling isn’t even close to Velasquez’. If Overeem can take down “Bigfoot” with ease, then so can Velasquez, and he already proved he can do that in their first fight.

But the difference between Overeem and Velasquez is that Velasquez actually has devastating ground and pound, and that’s going to prove to be the difference, just like it was the first time these two fought.

I’ve seen UFC president Dana White say that if you’re not interested in this fight that no one is forcing you to watch it, and you don’t have to buy it. Well, there are a lot of other fights on the card that I am interested in – dos Santos vs. Mark Hunt and Glover Teixeira vs. James Te Huna, just to name two — and that’s why I’m buying the card, not because of this main event rematch that neither I nor anyone else wanted to see this soon.

Hopefully “Bigfoot” proves everyone wrong and makes this fight more competitive than it seems on paper but I highly doubt it. Watch for Velasquez to defeat Silva yet again, and watch for him to do so in brutal fashion very early on in the fight.
