Earlier this year, UFC president Dana White remarked during a media scrum at UFC 157 that his organization’s roster was 100 fighters too heavy, and that the promotion would begin to trim the excess fat off the roster, so to speak.
That same day, the UFC released a number of veteran fighters, including Jon Fitch, Vladimir Matyushenko, and Terry Etim, but according to White, “The blood has not all been spilled yet.”
And he wasn’t lying, as over the course of the last six-plus months, a number of fighters were given their pink slips.
After White said the UFC needed to cut 100 guys, I took up the dubious honor of writing a list of 100 fighters the UFC could cut from the roster, and it became one of my most popular pieces of the year during the height of the UFC roster purge.
It’s been just over six months since White made his comments, so let’s see who from the original list of 100 fighters made the cut, and which fighters were actually cut.

As the numbers indicate, the UFC never actually got close to cutting the 100 fighters they said they would, and ironically have signed more than 21 new fighters in the six-plus months since White’s original comments.
Perhaps it was a ploy by White to get his fighters to go all out every night — and to be honest it may have worked, as the quality of fights has arguably improved in the last six months, for the most part. But regardless, the UFC never ended up actually cutting even close to the number of fighters they originally sought to get rid of.
There are still a few more months left in 2013, so perhaps some more of the fighters on the list will be cut. However, it’s clear that since the majority of the fighters on the original list survived, they must have really taken White’s comments to heart, and obviously for good reason.
