Everyone seems to be talking about why Frank never went for the takedown. It seems to me that he did not have a choice. Regardless of the impact his knee may have had, Frank knew based on passed experience that he would have a very difficult time trying to take Le down.
Another thing that seems to be overlooked is Cung’s incredible timing. He was able to time his kicks so accurately, Frank had a difficult time finding any openings. He used his kicks to jab and keep Frank at a distance and to hook with his roundhouse kick.
In retrospect many people are talking about how Frank should have been blocking those roundhouse kicks with two hands. While tat may be true, I think it’s understandable that Frank was trying counter the kick with a punch. Unfortunately he was able to due to Cung’s timing.
Another interesting dynamic of Cung’s style is that contrary to common references, he doesn’t have great “take downs” he has “put downs.” Meaning that he has great sweeps and throws and wisely chooses not to follow his opponent to the ground.
