Tomas Rios (Sherdog.com) preview: UFC Fight Night Goes Mile High
There seems to be a lot of buzz surrounding this Fight Night, and for good reason. Part of the hype is predicated on the fact that the card is fairly close to PPV Quality, especially when compared with the UFC’s upcoming Canadian effort in April.
The success of this card really depends on two things:
1.) The Karol Parisyan/Thiago Alves fight. Karo has been a fight of the night participant since his signing with the UFC. However, his conservative performance against Ryo Chonan on UFC 78 fell short of expectations, and contributed to the overall apathy of the fans for that card.
This is pivotal bout for this Fight Night, as it provides both a high-level competitive matchup (Alves is also considered a top prospect in the UFCs crowded WW Division) and a style clash that should provide fireworks. His performance against Chonan seemed to be an anomaly compared to his other fights, so there is no reason we should expect another lackluster effort, considering Alves aggressive style as well as Karo’s public discontent with his last performance.
2.) Undercard Fights. A strong line-up from the main event to the undercard and fan lobbying led to Spike TV giving this event a 3-hour time slot. There is a lot of fan interest in many of the undercard fights, and if they can slip in a few of the undercard fights between main card bouts and Spike TV mid-broadcast advertisements, it can fulfill fan interest and leave viewers satisfied, as well as add to the feel of getting a PPV for free with bonus fights. I think that the Ultimate Fighter 6 Finale succeeded in that regard (Quality of fighters aside), and this card could as well, although a few of the fights have the potential to go the distance (Parisyan vs.. Alves, Maynard vs.. Edgar, Hammill vs.. Boetsch, Pellegrino vs.. Diaz.)
On Paper, this looks like it should be a fantastic event. Let’s see if it lives up to the hype.
My Picks: 5-7
Kenny Florian
Tim Boetsch
Karo Parisyan
Marcus Aurelio
Din Thomas
Clay Guida
Tom Speer
George Sotiropoulos
Kurt Pellegrino
Frank Edgar
Houston Alexander
Manny Gamburyan
