Leading up to the fight I thought it was interesting how Penn ctiticized GSP for his mental fortitude. I always thought GSP mental issues were overblown. Granted he got caught once by Hughes and Serra (each), but that was just that, he got caught.
Meanwhile, Penn seems like the one who has given up in fights. When he’s gassed, he gave up in his training. He may have given up in his fight with Hughes. He gave up in this fight.
I knew GSP’s reach would negate Penn’s boxing and I knew GSP could get the take down and pass Penn’s guard.
I’m glad GSP is going to face Alves before going up to fight Anderson Silva. I’m picking GSP early against Alves. Alves is big and quick and hits hard. He also has a good defensive guard. But I think GSP wrestling and guard passing will be too much for him.
I don’t think GSP will beat Silva. I think Silva’s reach and footwork will be enough to keep the distance, but I could see GSP doing what Henderson tried to do, which is what he did against Penn.
I hope Penn goes back down to LW. I’m afraid he might just leave the UFC again.
Its ironic that in the Sherk fight may people said Sherk should have continued pressuring for the takedown, which Sherk seemed to think he couldn’t get. Maybe if he had, he could have slowed down Penn’s hands.

Obviously Penn is the favorite at LW, but I wouldn’t count Florian out. Penn’s win against Sherk was predicated on having the reach, which he won’t have on Florian.
The main issue with having grease on your back is that it ruins you high guard, which is the first thing, BJ went for when GSP took him down. I’m not saying it made a difference. By the second round, GSP was probably sweaty already.
Promotions definitely need to take every measure to avoid any impression of impropriety.
Consider Anderson Silva beating Yushin Okami and then losing because of an illegal up kick. You can lose a fight you were winning for doing something illegal. This could potentially be that kind of thing.
