The Ultimate Fighter 20.07: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly

By Nathan McCarter

The Ultimate Fighter was a little light this week, but it still provided quality content.

Rose Namajunas took on Alex Chambers in the next to last first round bout. The rising star took care of business as most expected by her heavy promotion during the season. Namajunas finished Chambers with a rear-naked choke in the first round.

Next week, Tecia Torres returns for a bit of redemption against Bec Rawlings.

Onward to the good, the bad, and the ugly of the latest episode of The Ultimate Fighter.

The Good:

  • We got a look at Chambers’ background in astrophysics and engineering. She put that behind her in her quest to become a mixed martial artist. Chambers is one of the most intelligent fighters in the game today. It was a nice look into the Aussie’s background.
  • Namajunas spoke about growing up around violence, sexual harassment, and abuse. It was a look into the personality of Namajunas, but most importantly she spoke about how anyone suffering should reach out and speak to someone — an important note that should probably have been promoted a bit more on the episode.
  • U.S. soccer stars Sydney Leroux and Megan Rapinoe came onto the show to talk to the cast. It wasn’t anything deep, but it was fun and allowed the athletes to mingle a bit. The upcoming Women’s World Cup will air on Fox in 2015.
  • Namajunas’ performance was crisp. She took it to Chambers from start to finish. After that performance one has to wonder how far she’ll go based on how strongly the UFC has promoted her.

The Bad:

  • Lisa Ellis and Heather Clark got heat at the start of the episode for spending time with Team Pettis. Spending weeks in the house leads to cliques, but there is nothing wrong with getting to know everyone regardless of teams. It was childish behavior.
  • Clark did in fact suffer a torn ACL, and some of the women apologized for questioning her. Then, a few, Namajunas and Angela Magana specifically, were filmed still taking jabs at Clark.

The Ugly:

  • Carla Esparza still has issues with Torres being on Team Pettis, and it’s time for her to get over it. It wasn’t Torres’ decision to switch teams. Esparza is coming off very petty.
