UFC Fight Night 76: Poirier vs. Duffy Preview

Dubliners will enjoy some UFC as their Irishman Joseph Duffy gets inside the Octagon against Dustin Poirier in the UFC Fight Night 76 headline match.

On October 24 we will be seeing which fighter can move up the division’s ranks, Duffy or Poirier. Duffy (13-1-0) will have his fellow countrymen behind him cheering, while Poirier (18-4-0) will be looking to finish the year with a hat-trick after he defeated Medeiros and Ferreira earlier this year.

The sports betting sites seem to favor Duffy probably because he is on a home turf, even though he hasn’t resided in Ireland since childhood. It has come to our knowledge that fans from South Africa and Nigeria are particularly interested in real cash betting on the UFC/MMA, which is why we can say to them that GamblingAfrica is worth a try where they can find places to do so.

C:UsersAdminDesktopSpringbok - blog.mmaratings.net 2.jpg Duffy is known as the last man to defeat Conor McGregor, the current Interim UFC Featherweight Championship winner, but that was 5 years ago when McGregor was just 4-1. Anyway, Duffy is known for much more than that, especially his exploits inside the octagon.

He was phenomenal in his win against Jake Lindsey in Dallas where he had a spectacular first-round TKO, and had a fantastic slick triangle finish in his last win against Ivan Jorge in Glasgow, which has earned him a place on the upcoming Dublin card. Just two fights in the UFC and he is already a headliner in his homeland and the “one to watch”.

Poirier’s history with McGregor and Irish fighters has not been so fortunate. He lost in UFC 178 by a first-round knockout in September 2014 in Las Vegas. This was his last defeat, which made him return to lightweight and since then he had two wins, one against Carlos Diego Ferreira with a first-round KO, and the second against Yancy Medeiros with a first-round TKO.

Poirier is Duffy’s stiffest UFC opponent so far and he is a top 15 ranked UFC lightweight fighter. However, Dana White is particularly keen on Duffy and believes that someday he will challenge for UFC gold. But, until then, Duffy has to prove himself against the well-rounded American Top Team fighter, whose win will get him closer to a title shot. If Duffy wins on the other hand, he will surely get into the Top 15 in his division.

Poirier is probably better at knocking out good defenders and avoiding being knocked out. He can fight into late rounds and is better at avoiding and escaping submissions. Duffy’s advantage is being better at securing submissions, which makes this a very interesting fight. He has a reasonable chance to win by submission despite Poirier’s abilities, while Poirier’s chance is in a knockout.
